Washington On-Site Sewage Association Membership
2019 WOSSA Membership ... What does the survival of your business have to do with being a member of a Professional Association?
… Plenty! Be unique, but don’t stand alone.
Hopefully you have been reading the past issues of the WOSSA Pipeline Magazine or have attended a recent class or WOSSA conference … because, this is what can happen when you are not paying attention.
“House Bill 1503
State of Washington 65th Legislature 2017 Regular Session By Representatives Short, Taylor, Van Werven, Buys, Haler, Kraft, and Hargrove
Read first time 01/23/17. Referred to Committee on Environment
NEW SECTION. Sec. 2. A new section is added to chapter 70.118A16 RCW to read as follows: This chapter does not require a local health jurisdiction to require that periodic inspections of an on-site sewage system in operation be conducted by a professional inspector.
Nothing in this chapter prohibits a county from relying on self-inspection of on-site sewage systems for the purposes of protecting the quality or quantity of surface or groundwater resources under chapter 36.70A RCW.”
Who helped bring this bill before the legislature? Members of an opposing Association ...
Citizens Opposed to On-Site Septic System Management in Washington (COOMWA)
What is COOMWA’s Mission Statement?
Coordinating a citizen’s movement to empower Onsite Septic System owners in the State of Washington to maintain their private property rights; reject regulatory fees; avoid intrusive monitoring; and contest government claims of pollution, spreading disease and impact on open water.
WOSSA was paying attention ... and was able to successfully defend against it. As business owners and professionals, we tend to try and control the things that affect our bottom line. However, your business is not an island unto itself and is affected by many external influences, such as organizations like COOMWA, State / County rules and regulations, health / safety rules, financial institutions and insurance. Some jobs are just too big to handle alone, which is why small businesses like your own formed the Washington On-Site Sewage Association.
Join WOSSA or renew your membership and benefit from the leverage and resources that a professional association can provide to its members. Without a professional association to represent you, your business is subject to things outside of your control: government, lenders and your competition. As a professional association, WOSSA performs many jobs on your behalf, such as state and local advocacy. We also provide industry related legislation support or opposition in Olympia with our lobbyist Tim Johnson. With your support WOSSA can do this much more effectively that you can as an individual.
As a WOSSA Member you now have a membership in NOWRA
Now that WOSSA is a Full NOWRA Affiliate, you are entitled to enjoy the full benefits of being a NOWRA member. Here are some of the things NOWRA is doing on behalf of its members.
Representation in Washington D.C. and in Our State
85 million Americans - a quarter of our population - rely on onsite treatment systems instead of public sewer systems, but of the billions of dollars the federal government gives the states to address wastewater treatment, we receive less than 1% of those dollars. This is fundamentally unfair to our interests in a number of ways.
NOWRA believes this has gone on for far too long. Since 2014, we have had an active lobbying effort at both the Congressional and Federal Agency levels. We think more needs to be done at the federal level to secure legislative and policy changes which foster expanded use of onsite and decentralized technology and which can help the industry address the policy, management, and financial issues caused in large part by neglect at the federal level.
Every NOWRA member receives a free listing on the Septic Locator, the only national, searchable directory of providers of onsite wastewater management services. Once your information is entered in Septic Locator database, you have an opportunity to be found by homeowners and others who are looking for your services. Best of all, your listing is controlled by you -- you can change contact information, services offered and other information in real time. You will receive notification on how to log in to your Septic Locator listing once your data is posted.
NOWRA has resumed publication of the Onsite Journal magazine. This 4-color magazine offers useful information about national developments affecting onsite wastewater, reports from state affiliates and industry vendors, and updates on NOWRA programs and services of interest.
NOWRA provides all members with opportunities to have a voice in its affairs. Whether you express that by voting in NOWRA’s Board of Directors elections, participating in our annual meeting, commenting on proposals, volunteering your time on a committee or task force, or simply sharing your views with a board member, NOWRA welcomes and encourages your involvement in our activities.
National Backhoe Roe-D-Hoe® Competition
Held annually, this competition is intended to showcase the skills of contractors and the equipment they operate through a series of timed exercises contestants must perform on a backhoe. NOWRA also sanctions a number of state Roe-D-Hoe® competitions around the country; the state winners are automatically grandfathered into the national finals where they compete against the winner of the open competition.
